Writing pages that answer engines can quote

MT

Answer engine optimisation sounds like a new discipline. In practice it is an editing standard. The models are not looking for keywords; they are looking for sentences they can lift without breaking.

The one rule #

A quotable sentence carries its own context. That is the whole thing. Everything below is a way of enforcing it.

Write so a stranger can paste any single sentence into a chat window and have it still be true.

The checklist #

Hand this to whoever writes the page:

What this looks like in practice #

Here is the same claim written twice.

Before:

Our platform is designed to make onboarding as painless as possible,
with a range of tools that help teams get up and running quickly.

After:

Onboarding takes about nine minutes: connect a domain, pick 10 prompts,
and the first report lands the same day.

The second version survives being pulled out of the page. The first does not.

Formatting that helps #

ElementWhy it helps
<h2> per questionGives the model a retrieval boundary
Short paragraphsOne idea per lift
Tables for comparisonsStructure survives extraction
Explicit datesSignals freshness without a claim

What to measure #

Do not measure “AEO score”. Measure whether your sentences show up. Track the prompts your buyers actually ask, log which pages get cited, and watch whether a rewrite changes the citation mix within two weeks.

If you want the mechanics behind why position matters more than presence, that is covered in the GEO experiment write-up.
